My focus is on Eastern Europe, particularly the Russian Civil War, the Soviet-Polish War of 1920, WWII, and the recent Russo-Ukrainian War. I speak and read Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, and German, which is useful in my research. I concede that my ten years in the Marine Corps (1978-1988), the last five of which were spent as a judge advocate, do not qualify me as a military operator. However, the recent cacophony of divergent and often thinly supported views on the Russian war in Ukraine compelled me to review recent Russian and Ukrainian open sources. This informs the discussion today.
